For people claiming asylum on or after 2 March 2026, the initial period of permission granted as a refugee has been reduced from 60 to 30 months; the change took effect on 26 March 2026. The government is also advancing a model of temporary protection and a longer route to permanent residence.
According to the sources, recognised refugees may now need to renew their protection after 30 months rather than five years, with their ongoing need for asylum reviewed at the extension stage. This makes the status less secure in the early years and increases the importance of renewal deadlines and evidence that protection is still needed. The change primarily affects new asylum applicants who claimed protection from 2 March 2026, not ordinary work or study migrants. It is therefore highly relevant to people considering or already using the asylum route.
