Third-country nationals face specific document, visa and stay-duration requirements

Published: 27.08.2026

Third-country nationals need a valid travel document recognised by Switzerland and, for long stays, work, study or family reunification, a category D national visa or an appropriate residence permit. Short stays are generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period, and self-funded visitors must demonstrate at least CHF 100 per day.

The sources distinguish clearly between short visits and relocation: a Schengen visa does not replace the national procedure for employment, study or family reunification. For someone planning a move, this means obtaining the correct permit or category D visa before entry and respecting the 90-day limit where only short-term stay is allowed. F and N permits are especially important to note because they confirm temporary stay but are not travel documents for leaving Switzerland. This is highly relevant to third-country workers, students and families and should be checked before travel and filing an application.
