Slovenia’s 2026 residence-permit guidance retains purpose and document requirements

Published: 30.09.2026

The first single permit is generally issued for the duration of the employment contract, up to a maximum of two years. Applications are assessed on the basis of the purpose of stay, financial means, a criminal-record certificate and health insurance; registering a d.o.o. company alone does not grant residence or work rights.

According to the source, the initial work permit is tied to the employment contract and capped at two years, so applicants should plan renewals around their employment status or another legal basis for stay. Entrepreneurs should note that registering a company does not replace the immigration requirements for a company director or representative. For a long-term move, the reported five-year route to permanent residence, including A2 Slovenian-language knowledge, and the general ten-year citizenship route are also important. This is particularly relevant to workers, entrepreneurs and anyone building a long-term legalization plan in Slovenia.
