Slovenian Government proposes tighter conditions for foreign nationals

Published: 22.10.2026

The bill would increase the minimum period of lawful residence required for family reunification by third-country nationals from one year to three years and raise the required means of subsistence to €1,014.86. It also proposes stricter Slovenian-language requirements and replacing free language and integration courses for third-country nationals with 60% co-financing.

According to sources, these are government proposals rather than rules already in force. If adopted, applicants for residence permits would need to demonstrate higher financial means, while family migrants would have to complete three years of lawful residence before applying for reunification. The changes are particularly important for third-country nationals, families and people planning a move through employment or another long-term status; language-integration costs could also increase. Anyone preparing an application or a family relocation should monitor the proposal, but should not yet treat the new requirements as effective rules.
