Slovenia prepares legislation to implement the EU Migration and Asylum Pact

Published: 22.10.2026

The Slovenian Government approved a bill establishing national authorities and procedures for implementing the EU Migration and Asylum Pact. It covers screening of third-country nationals at the EU’s external borders, border procedures, reception of international-protection applicants, safeguards for vulnerable people, responsibility-sharing between Member States and the Eurodac system.

According to sources, the bill would integrate the EU’s new migration and asylum procedures into Slovenia’s national system, including border screening and the processing of protection claims. For people planning to relocate, it is mainly relevant to asylum seekers and those arriving through the EU’s external border rather than to ordinary residence-permit applicants. In the longer term, it may affect registration, reception and the determination of which country is responsible for an application. It deserves close attention from people considering protection or humanitarian routes, while its relevance is lower for labour migrants and other ordinary applicants.
