Since 21 November 2025, third-country nationals working remotely for a foreign employer or as self-employed persons abroad can obtain a temporary residence permit as digital nomads. Such applicants are not considered part of Slovenia’s labour market and therefore do not need consent from the Slovenian Employment Service.
According to the source, the new status is intended for remote workers whose employment or self-employed activity is based outside Slovenia. For relocation, it creates a separate immigration route without the employment-service consent required for ordinary work in Slovenia. It primarily affects non-EU digital nomads who want to live in Slovenia while remaining outside the Slovenian labour market. People planning to work for a Slovenian employer or enter the local labour market should not treat this permit as a substitute for a standard work-based residence route.
