EU Entry/Exit System Creates Travel Difficulties for Serbian Citizens and Border Residents

Published: 14.07.2026

Serbian authorities said they are addressing bilaterally the problems arising after the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) was introduced. The European Commission confirmed that EES does not change the Schengen stay rule of up to 90 days in any 180-day period unless a long-stay visa or specific arrangement applies.

According to the sources, EES increases scrutiny at the EU’s external borders but does not introduce a new stay limit: Serbian citizens and other visa-exempt travellers remain subject to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is particularly relevant for people living in Serbia who regularly travel to the EU, work on both sides of the border, or use Serbia as a base for Schengen travel. Serbian authorities are seeking solutions for border residents and certain highly mobile professions, but the general limit remains applicable. Anyone planning frequent or extended EU trips should pay attention to day counting and possible additional checks.
