European Commission Urges Serbia to Strengthen Visa Screening and Raises Concerns Over Citizenship Granted to Russian Nationals

Published: 07.06.2026

The European Commission considers visa-free entry of Russian citizens to Serbia and the growing number of Serbian citizenships granted to them a potential EU security risk. It also called on Serbia to strengthen screening of visa applications from countries associated with irregular migration or security risks; Serbia’s president said the country does not plan to introduce visas for Russian citizens.

According to the source, this is the European Commission’s assessment and recommendation, not an immediate change to Serbia’s entry or citizenship rules. Over time, EU pressure could lead to stricter screening of visa applications and changes to Serbia’s visa-free arrangements for certain third countries, affecting relocation plans and subsequent travel in Europe. Russian citizens and nationals of other countries that retain visa-free access to Serbia are most directly concerned, as are applicants for Serbian citizenship. It is worth monitoring, but the report does not establish that new restrictions are already in force.
