Alta Bank Loses Its Licence, Affecting Russian Clients in Serbia

Published: 04.11.2026

The National Bank of Serbia revoked Alta Bank’s operating licence on 31 October 2026, citing a significant deterioration in its financial condition and liquidity concerns. Russian clients reported losing access to personal and business accounts; insured deposits of up to €50,000 are to be reimbursed through the Deposit Insurance Agency, while claims above that amount enter the bankruptcy process.

According to sources, the closure of Alta Bank has already affected Russian clients’ access to savings, everyday payments and business operations in Serbia. In the short term, account holders need to consider both the reimbursement process for insured deposits and the transfer of payments and financial operations to another bank. The situation is particularly relevant to Russian residents and entrepreneurs, who already face stricter account-opening procedures because of sanctions and source-of-funds checks. Anyone holding money or running a business through Alta Bank should treat this as a high-priority relocation and banking issue.
