Serbian banks tighten dealings with Russian clients and banks

Published: 23.12.2025

Media reports say Serbian and Armenian financial institutions are closing previously opened accounts held by Russian nationals, including those with residence or work permits. Reports also say that cards issued by Russia’s Mir payment system would no longer be accepted and that transactions with Russian banks have been reduced.

According to the source, Serbian banks are reducing dealings connected with Russian banks amid international restrictions and the impaired access of some Russian institutions to SWIFT. Holding a Serbian residence or work permit, the report says, does not guarantee that a bank account will be maintained. This directly affects Russian residents in Serbia, account holders, and people relying on transfers between Serbia and Russia. New and existing customers in this group should pay close attention to banking restrictions in advance, since account closures or unavailable payment cards can complicate everyday payments and transfers.
