Foreigners Can Open Serbian Bank Accounts Without Residence Permits, Subject to Bank Approval

Published: 07.09.2026

Serbian rules allow non-resident foreigners, including those without a residence permit, to open dinar and foreign-currency accounts. In practice, applicants usually need to appear in person and provide proof of address and source of funds, while approval depends on the individual bank’s internal policies.

For people relocating, this means a basic Serbian bank account may be available before obtaining a residence permit, but access is not automatic at every bank. At the initial stage, a bank may ask for a passport, proof of stay, the purpose of the account, and the source of funds, with non-residents facing more individualized conditions and possible transaction limits. Obtaining a residence permit generally makes banking easier over time, but banking status and tax residence remain separate matters. This is particularly relevant to non-residents, recent arrivals, and anyone planning to transfer substantial funds to Serbia or receive income from abroad.
