Romania records positive net migration for the fourth consecutive year

Published: 30.10.2026

According to a Social Monitor analysis based on official statistics, Romania’s net migration was positive by 66,920 people in 2025. Returning Romanian citizens represented a substantial share of long-term immigrants, while Ukrainians, Nepalese and Sri Lankans accounted for notable groups among foreign nationals.

According to the sources, Romania is continuing its shift from a major emigration country toward a destination country, with positive net migration for the fourth consecutive year. This points to Romania’s growing role as a destination for returning citizens and foreign workers, but it does not by itself mean that visa or residence-permit procedures have become easier. The trend is mainly relevant to people assessing Romania as a long-term destination and labour-migration market. Its practical value for an individual move is limited, since entry and residence requirements remain the decisive factors.
