Bill would allow foreign spouses of Romanian citizens to apply for citizenship from abroad

Published: 08.07.2026

An initiative submitted by the Save Romania Union (USR) would allow foreign spouses of Romanian citizens to apply for Romanian citizenship while living abroad. The proposed condition is that the marriage must have been registered in Romanian civil-status records for at least 10 years.

According to the source, this is a legislative initiative rather than a rule already in force. If adopted, foreign spouses of Romanian citizens living abroad could apply for Romanian citizenship without relocating to Romania before submitting the application. The main proposed filter would be proof that the marriage has been registered in Romanian civil-status records for at least ten years. The initiative is therefore most relevant to families with a Romanian-citizen spouse, but it should not yet be treated as an available application route.
