Indonesian Long-Stay Visas Do Not Always Grant Resident or Work Status

Published: 07.08.2026

D1 and D12 visas allow extended stays in Indonesia but do not convert into a KITAS or grant the right to work in the country. Living, remote work, employment, or investment requires a separate KITAS route with its own eligibility requirements.

According to the sources, Indonesia distinguishes visit visas from limited-stay permits: a long period of stay does not by itself create resident status. For a person planning to relocate, this means the visa category and residence basis must be chosen in advance, since a visit route is not an automatic path to a KITAS. The issue is especially relevant to remote workers, employees of Indonesian companies, investors, and people intending to stay for years. It is worth checking before arrival because the appropriate KITAS application may need to be made separately.
