Indonesia’s Global Citizenship of Indonesia program offers former citizens, people of Indonesian descent and certain members of mixed-nationality families a route to long-term or indefinite residence. The status does not grant citizenship, work rights or automatic land-ownership rights; separate work authorization is required.
According to the sources, GCI creates an alternative to reacquiring Indonesian citizenship for people with ties to Indonesia, offering long-term or indefinite residence with simplified renewal requirements and multiple re-entry rights. This can reduce reliance on employment, investment or marital status as the basis for maintaining residence, which is particularly relevant to the diaspora and mixed-nationality families. The program does not replace a work permit and does not make holders Indonesian citizens. Former citizens, descendants and mixed families planning a long-term return or relocation should therefore pay close attention to this pathway.
