Indonesia Tightens Oversight of Visa Conditions and Length of Stay

Published: 24.09.2026

Indonesian visas and stay permits must match the visitor’s actual purpose of stay; working on a tourist visa is prohibited. Overstay is subject to a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day, while overstays of 60 days or more may lead to deportation and a re-entry ban.

According to the sources, Indonesia applies a “one permit, one actual purpose of stay” approach: tourist status is not intended for employment, including remote work or providing services locally. People relocating to Indonesia therefore need to choose a work, investor or other suitable status in advance rather than rely on explaining their activities later. Overstay can quickly become costly, and after 60 days may result in deportation and a re-entry restriction. This is particularly important for digital nomads, freelancers and anyone planning a long stay on a short-term visa.
