Temporary Protection for Ukrainians in Greece Runs Until 4 March 2028

Published: 05.10.2026

Temporary protection in Greece is valid until 4 March 2028 and provides access to work, business, education and healthcare. However, time spent under temporary protection does not count toward the residence period required for Greek permanent residence or citizenship, so another legal basis will be needed after the status ends.

According to the source, temporary protection remains a valid basis for living and working in Greece until March 2028, but it does not automatically convert into a long-term immigration status. Ukrainians intending to stay permanently therefore need to plan another basis—such as employment, study, family, investment or another residence route—if they want time toward permanent residence or citizenship to count. Visa-free tourist stay does not provide the same solution and is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. This matters most to people whose long-term relocation plan currently relies only on temporary protection.
