Germany Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainians Until 4 March 2028

Published: 08.10.2026

Germany has extended temporary protection for Ukrainian nationals until 4 March 2028. New arrivals may enter and remain in Germany for up to 90 days without a residence permit until 4 December 2027, but from 9 October this simplified procedure will not apply to persons subject to military service unless they provide proof of compliance with Ukrainian military-service requirements.

For Ukrainians, the decision preserves access to temporary protection for several more years and extends simplified entry for new arrivals without an immediate residence-permit application. According to sources, from 9 October new applicants subject to military service will need to prove lawful departure, fulfilment of military obligations, or an exemption; people who already hold protection are not affected by this restriction. This is especially important for Ukrainian families and anyone planning to move after that date, as the relevant military-service documents should be prepared in advance. Other Ukrainian applicants benefit from a substantially longer protection horizon, so the update is important for relocation planning.
