German authorities indicate that a foreign national may be refused or denied renewal of a work-based residence permit if their professional activity affects Germany’s interests or poses a threat. Sanctions violations, including providing prohibited services to sanctioned media, may carry criminal consequences and lead to loss of the right to stay.
According to sources, sanctions can create not only financial or criminal-law exposure for foreign nationals but also immigration consequences, including refusal or non-renewal of a work residence permit and, in some cases, loss of the right to stay. The issue is most relevant to journalists, media workers and contractors cooperating with sanctioned organisations or helping circumvent broadcasting restrictions. Working for a media outlet does not automatically amount to a violation; the nature of the activity and its connection to prohibited content distribution or the provision of economic resources are important. Foreign residents whose employment involves Russian or other sanctioned organisations should therefore treat the issue as relevant to their residence status.
