Citizens of certain countries retain visa-free entry to Germany for up to 90 days

Published: 01.09.2026

Citizens of certain countries may enter Germany visa-free for short-term purposes for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Visa-free entry does not itself permit paid work, although nationals of some countries may apply for a residence permit after arrival, including for work or study.

According to the sources, visa-free entry remains a short-stay mechanism and does not replace a national visa or residence permit for employment. For eligible nationals, the ability to apply after arrival may shorten part of the relocation process, but the right to live and work long term arises only after the relevant permit is issued. The rule primarily affects workers, students and citizens of visa-exempt countries; time spent elsewhere in the Schengen Area also counts toward the 90/180-day limit. Anyone planning a permanent move should focus on the residence-permit basis and the prohibition on starting paid work before authorization.
