The UAE’s 180-day absence rule continues to apply to most residents

Published: 18.08.2026

A UAE residence visa generally becomes invalid after more than 180 consecutive days outside the country. Exceptions apply to some categories, including Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders; eligible residents outside Dubai may seek an ICP return permit for a justified reason, while Dubai visa holders must use GDRFA procedures.

According to the source, prolonged absence remains a material risk for holders of standard UAE residence visas: the relevant period is one continuous stay abroad, not the sum of separate trips. People planning to live between countries should track the 180-day limit and distinguish between ICP procedures for most emirates and GDRFA procedures for Dubai. Some residents who exceed the limit can apply for a return permit with supporting evidence and must enter within a limited period after approval. This is a key rule for remote workers, families and ordinary residence-visa holders; long-term residence holders should verify whether an exemption applies to their category.
