UAE residence rules cover visa validity, prolonged absence and overstays

Published: 28.09.2026

For many residents, staying outside the UAE continuously for more than 180 days generally invalidates the residence visa, subject to exceptions. A person returning after such an absence can apply for an entry permit with a justified reason; overstaying is charged at AED 50 per day, while grace periods of up to six months may apply after a residence permit is cancelled or expires, depending on the category.

According to the UAE government portal, a prolonged absence can invalidate a residence visa, so people planning frequent or extended travel should check the applicable exceptions and re-entry conditions in advance. After 180 days abroad, the re-entry permit application is submitted from outside the UAE, and the charge may be AED 100 for every 30 days of absence. Overstaying also creates a direct cost of AED 50 per day. This is particularly relevant to investors, remote workers and families who do not intend to remain in the UAE continuously.
