Türkiye maintains separate residence and work-permit categories for foreigners

Published: 04.10.2026

Türkiye’s immigration framework provides a closed list of residence-permit grounds, including short-term, family, student, long-term and other special permits. A residence permit does not itself authorize employment; a separate work permit is generally required under the rules governing foreign workers.

The practical implication is that relocation cannot be based on a general-purpose residence permit: the applicant must fit a specific category and document the relevant purpose. Employment normally requires a separate procedure, often involving an employer, so entry or residence status does not replace work authorization. This is particularly important for workers, students, families and people who may want to change their basis of stay after arrival. Prospective movers should identify the correct category in advance and not begin working solely on the basis of a tourist or other residence permit.
