Türkiye Introduces a 20-Year Tax Exemption for Certain New Tax Residents

Published: 15.06.2026

Changes published on 4 June 2026 provide qualifying new Turkish tax residents with an exemption from Turkish tax on foreign-source income and gains for up to 20 years. They also introduce an “Asset Peace” regime for declaring certain foreign-held and unrecorded domestic assets, generally subject to a one-off 5% tax if the applicable conditions are met.

According to the sources, some individuals who become Turkish tax residents for the first time may be exempt from Turkish tax on foreign-source income and gains for up to 20 years. This could materially reduce the long-term tax burden and influence relocation decisions for people with overseas income or assets. The separate “Asset Peace” regime is relevant to those considering the declaration of previously unrecorded assets, as it provides for a one-off tax and conditions under which the rate may be reduced. It deserves attention before relocating and establishing tax residence, particularly for investors and people whose income is generated outside Türkiye.
