Thai banks check an applicant’s visa status, address, purpose of the account and source of funds. A standard resident account generally requires a long-term non-immigrant status, LTR or Thailand Privilege, while non-residents use separate NRBA products; access and requirements vary by bank.
According to the sources, opening a standard Thai bank account as a foreigner is now tied not only to a passport but also to a documented basis for staying in Thailand. Relocators should be prepared to show a long-term visa, proof of address, a Thai phone number and source-of-funds documents; tourist or visa-exempt status sharply limits the available banking products. Non-residents can use dedicated accounts, but these are intended for specific purposes and are subject to Bank of Thailand controls, including a balance cap of up to THB 200 million. This matters most to digital nomads, new residents and anyone who needs local payments, rent transfers or PromptPay, so banking arrangements should be planned before relocation.
