Sweden is tightening family-reunification rules

Published: 18.08.2026

From 1 October 2026, maintenance requirements will apply in more family-immigration cases, including some extensions of temporary permits. As a general rule, a sponsor with a temporary residence permit must have lived in Sweden with a permit for at least two years; for certain applicants, the possibility of applying from inside Sweden will temporarily expand.

The sources show that family migration to Sweden will depend more heavily on the sponsor’s status, length of residence and proof of financial support. This may delay reunification for families of temporary-permit holders and increase the documentation burden around income and maintenance. At the same time, certain categories will temporarily gain broader access to in-country applications, with that provision scheduled to end on 1 January 2028. The change is highly relevant to people moving through a partner or family route and should be built into application timing around 1 October.
