New EU rules may complicate non-EU bank accounts for Sweden residents

Published: 30.10.2026

Sweden has set 11 January 2027 as the start date for new EU rules affecting non-EU banks. Such banks will generally need an authorised local branch or a local arrangement to continue providing core banking services to Sweden-based clients, with the rules applying to agreements signed after 10 July 2026.

For people who have relocated, the rules may require a review of banking relationships in their country of origin, especially where accounts are used for taxes, pensions or recurring payments. A bank may request proof of an address outside the EU or stop serving Sweden-based clients if it does not meet the new requirements. Contracts signed before 11 July 2026 are covered by a grandfathering provision, and the way the client approached the bank may also matter. According to the source, holders of non-EU accounts should check their service terms before January 2027.
