Sweden will consider conduct more closely when granting or maintaining residence permits

Published: 18.08.2026

From 13 July 2026, Swedish authorities have broader powers to consider an alien’s conduct when granting or withdrawing a residence permit. Grounds for refusal or withdrawal may include, among other things, breaches of laws or official decisions, substantial debts or earning a living dishonestly.

According to the sources, conduct is now an independent factor not only in obtaining but also in retaining a residence permit. For foreigners already living in Sweden, compliance with official decisions and financial obligations therefore has direct immigration significance. The rule affects a broad range of permit holders rather than a narrowly defined migrant category. Anyone planning a move or permit extension should treat it as a lasting tightening of the conditions for maintaining residence.
