Spain approves extraordinary regularisation for some undocumented migrants

Published: 16.04.2026

In January 2026, Spain approved an extraordinary regularisation process for up to 500,000 undocumented migrants and asylum seekers who were in the country before 31 December 2025 and have no criminal record. Successful applicants receive an initial one-year residence permit and authorisation to work.

According to sources, the measure creates a temporary route to legal status for people already in Spain rather than a new way to enter the country. Eligible applicants may obtain lawful residence and work rights, but access is tied to having been in Spain before the specified date and having no criminal record. The development primarily affects undocumented migrants and international-protection applicants already living in Spain. People planning to move from abroad should view it mainly as a reminder that this route is exceptional and does not replace ordinary entry and residence procedures.
