The EU has updated its list of Spanish residence permits and documents treated as equivalent to residence permits, including student and EU-family-member cards. Spanish documents issued under temporary protection for people affected by the conflict in Ukraine remain valid until 4 March 2027 without a new residence card.
According to the official list, the update confirms which Spanish documents are recognised for crossing the Schengen external borders. The most practical consequence concerns people under temporary protection: their documents remain valid until 4 March 2027 without the need to obtain a new card. This matters to current foreign residents, students and family members of EU citizens who need to prove their status while travelling. For future movers, the update is mainly reference information and does not create a new basis for obtaining residence.
