South Korea Eases Stay Extensions for Foreign Victims of Crime

Published: 04.09.2026

Foreign nationals who are victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse or other human-rights violations can now apply for stay extensions and other permits at the immigration offices serving the shelters where they are staying. Previously, applications had to be filed at the office covering their registered address.

According to the source, the change moves the application point closer to a victim’s temporary place of safety: the immigration office responsible for the shelter where the person is staying. This may make it easier for foreign nationals who have left their registered home to preserve lawful status and request related permits. The measure primarily affects victims of violence and their families who are staying in shelters. Anyone in this situation should take the shelter’s immigration jurisdiction into account when preparing an application.
