South Africa strengthens migration enforcement and introduces digital entry systems

Published: 08.09.2026

The Inter-Ministerial Committee reported intensified enforcement of immigration and labour laws, alongside the launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation and upgraded EMCS2.0 movement-control system at OR Tambo Airport. Authorities also closed the temporary repatriation centre in Musina and continued drafting a new legal framework for migration and citizenship management.

According to sources, South Africa is moving toward more systematic digital and administrative control of entry, residence and compliance with immigration rules. The launch of the ETA and EMCS2.0 may make status and movement checks more technology-driven, while intensified inspections increase the importance of valid visas, work permissions and supporting documents. This primarily affects foreigners already in the country, workers and people planning to enter or take up employment. Anyone relocating to South Africa should follow official permit requirements and use formal ports of entry; the development is important as a sign of tighter long-term enforcement.
