Australian citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits to South Africa of up to 90 days. Other travel purposes, re-entry after departure and permanent residence are subject to separate visa procedures.
The official consular guidance confirms simplified short-term tourist entry for Australian citizens, but does not extend visa-free travel to work, study or permanent relocation. Leaving South Africa does not automatically guarantee a new 90-day period, so travellers should not rely on an automatic visa run. The information is most relevant to Australian citizens considering a trial move or a preliminary visit before applying for long-term status. They should state the purpose of travel accurately and obtain the appropriate visa for other activities.
