Permanent residents need a valid Re-Entry Permit to retain status when travelling abroad

Published: 28.10.2026

Singapore permanent residents must hold a valid Re-Entry Permit (REP) when leaving the country in order to retain PR status. Renewal is available through ICA’s e-Service within three months before expiry, while PRs abroad without a valid REP have a separate application window of 180 days.

According to the source, Singapore PR status is linked not only to the right to reside in the country but also to maintaining a valid REP when travelling abroad. PRs should therefore monitor the permit’s expiry and renew it through Singpass in advance, or use a Singapore overseas mission when abroad. Losing PR status may affect later opportunities to work, study or obtain other long-term immigration facilities. The rule is particularly important for families and professionals planning extended travel after obtaining permanent residence.
