Foreign residents in Portugal whose residence permits expire by 31 January 2027 can begin the renewal process online through the AIMA portal before their documents expire. The portal also covers certain investment residence permits, EU permanent-residence certificates and permanent-residence cards for eligible family members.
According to the source, eligible residence-document holders can start renewal in advance through an online AIMA procedure rather than waiting until expiry. Applicants must use the channel matching their document type and expiry date and should verify their address and email in AIMA’s records, since a renewed card may be sent to the registered address. Once the renewal request and fee are registered, AIMA issues a receipt valid for 180 days, so residents should not rely solely on an expired card. The change is most relevant to ordinary residents, Golden Visa holders, EU citizens and eligible family members whose documents expire within the covered period.
