Paraguay reports a record increase in residency applications

Published: 27.10.2026

Paraguay reported a historically high volume of residency applications in 2026: nearly 50,000 requests, with more than 70% submitted by Brazilian citizens. Authorities also said applicants generally begin with a two-year temporary residency before applying for permanent status, while mobile MigraMóvil operations are being used to speed up processing.

According to the sources, demand for legal residence in Paraguay has risen sharply, particularly among Brazilian citizens, and the Migration Directorate is expanding mobile services. For prospective migrants, temporary residency remains the usual first step, while permanent status requires a separate procedure and documentation. MigraMóvil may be useful for applicants in border areas, but it does not itself change the residency requirements. The development is relevant when planning application timing and deciding where to submit documents.
