New Zealand First unveiled an election platform that includes a possible referendum on capping resident visas at 20,000 per year, longer qualification periods for permanent residence and citizenship, and a 10-year stand-down from benefits for non-citizens. Other proposals concern student visa holders, asylum seekers and overstayers.
The sources describe election proposals rather than changes already enacted into law. If implemented, they could lengthen the route to permanent residence and citizenship, while an annual resident-visa cap could make long-term migration more competitive. The platform also proposes requiring students to leave New Zealand to switch visas and removing automatic work rights, alongside tighter rules for asylum seekers and overstayers. The issue is therefore important for prospective long-term migrants, students and temporary visa holders, although these announcements do not by themselves change the current rules.
