The Netherlands tightens asylum rules under the EU Migration Pact

Published: 26.05.2026

From 12 June 2026, recognised refugees will no longer receive indefinite or permanent residence permits, while the initial temporary permit will be shortened from five years to three. Family reunification requirements are also tightened, and the deadline for appealing an IND decision is reduced from four weeks to two.

According to the source, the changes primarily affect people seeking protection through the asylum procedure, rather than ordinary labour or student migrants. Their route to long-term status becomes less direct because the temporary permit must be renewed and IND decisions must be challenged within a shorter deadline. Tighter family reunification rules may also make it harder for relatives to join an asylum beneficiary. Future asylum applicants and their families should pay close attention, while the practical impact on other relocation routes is limited.
