Since 9 April 2026, the Entry/Exit System (EES) has applied to non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The system automatically records entry and exit dates to monitor compliance with the 90/180-day rule.
According to the sources, short-term travel to the Netherlands is now subject to more automated monitoring because entry and exit dates are recorded in the EES. This does not replace a visa or residence permit, but it makes mistakes involving the 90/180-day limit easier for authorities to detect. The change primarily affects non-EU nationals travelling as visitors; residence-permit and long-stay-visa holders are among those excluded from the system. It is worth noting for anyone planning to enter first as a visitor before arranging a longer-term move.
