Biometric passports will be required for Russian travelers entering the Netherlands from 1 October 2026

Published: 23.09.2026

A passport used to enter the Netherlands must remain valid for at least three months after departure from the Schengen Area. According to the source, from 1 October 2026, five-year non-biometric passports will no longer be accepted.

For Russian travelers, this creates an additional document check before departure and makes obtaining a biometric passport necessary if the current document is a five-year passport. The rule directly affects access to the country, so using the wrong passport type could disrupt travel after 1 October 2026. It primarily concerns Russian citizens planning short visits or using the Netherlands as an entry point for relocation. Anyone planning travel after that date should pay attention to this requirement and verify the documents through the Dutch government’s entry guidance.
