Mexico outlines the temporary residence visa process for foreigners

Published: 13.10.2026

Temporary residence is intended for stays in Mexico of more than 180 days and up to four years. It allows work when the salary is paid from abroad; work paid in Mexico requires prior authorization from the National Institute of Migration. After entering Mexico, the residence card must be obtained within 30 calendar days.

According to the source, a long-term mover must not only obtain the visa but also complete the residence-card process within 30 days after entering Mexico. For remote workers and digital nomads, the key condition is that their salary is paid from abroad, while locally paid work requires separate authorization from the National Migration Institute. This primarily affects people planning to stay for more than 180 days and employers hiring foreigners in Mexico. It is worth checking before relocation because the visa category and the way income is paid determine the required immigration process.
