Malaysia’s budget expands work options for remote professionals and expatriate spouses

Published: 23.10.2026

According to the Budget 2027 coverage, DE Rantau pass holders will be allowed to stay and work remotely in Malaysia for an additional two years. Spouses of Employment Pass Category I holders will be allowed to work in the country; the measure had previously been identified as starting on 1 January 2027.

Sources point to expanded legal work options for two groups of newcomers: DE Rantau holders will be able to remain in Malaysia while working remotely for an additional two years, and spouses of certain highly skilled expatriates will gain access to employment. For digital nomads, this may extend the period of stay without an immediate switch to another status, while for Employment Pass Category I families it creates a route for the spouse to work independently. The measure primarily affects remote professionals and families of foreign employees in Category I. People planning a move under either route should take it into account when selecting a long-term status and planning their stay.
