Spouses of certain expatriates will be allowed to work in Malaysia from 1 January 2027

Published: 09.10.2026

Spouses of Employment Pass Category I holders on a dependant pass will be allowed to work in Malaysia from 1 January 2027, subject to conditions. The measure is listed in Malaysia’s Budget 2027 highlights.

According to the source, from 1 January 2027 a dependant pass will no longer automatically prevent spouses of Employment Pass Category I holders from working, provided the stated conditions are met. For expatriate families, this may reduce the need to arrange a separate basis for the spouse’s employment and make relocation planning easier. The measure primarily affects families of highly qualified employees relocating under Category I. Anyone planning a family move after that date should take the change into account when choosing work and dependant statuses.
