Luxembourg replaced the temporary residence authorisation with a D visa for first residence applications

Published: 27.10.2026

From 1 October 2026, nationals from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland planning to stay in Luxembourg for more than 90 days for work, study or family reunification must personally apply for a D visa at a Luxembourg embassy or the competent Belgian embassy. After arrival, they must register with their municipality within three days and apply for a residence permit; the visa is valid for six months and allows travel within the Schengen Area while the permit is being issued.

According to sources, first-time movers to Luxembourg must now obtain a national D visa in advance instead of the former temporary residence authorisation. This changes the application sequence and requires a personal visit to a diplomatic mission before departure, while the three-day deadline for municipal registration and residence-permit filing remains after arrival. The rule primarily affects third-country nationals moving for work, study or family reunification; EU citizens and people covered by specified alternative regimes are excluded. Anyone planning a move after 1 October 2026 should pay close attention, because using the wrong pre-arrival document could disrupt the entry and residence-permit timeline.
