Italy sets validity periods and conditions for residence permits

Published: 01.12.2025

Foreign nationals must apply for a residence permit within eight working days of entering Italy. The permit duration depends on the basis of stay: up to nine months for seasonal work, one year for a fixed-term employment contract and two years for an indefinite contract; renewals must be requested at least 60 days before expiry.

According to the official text, meeting the application deadlines is essential for maintaining lawful residence and employment in Italy. For labour migrants, the duration of status is directly linked to the type of employment contract, so the job arrangement affects how long they can plan to stay. The rule is particularly relevant to workers who need to prepare their application in advance and avoid missing the renewal deadline. People planning a work-based move should read it as a basic guide to residence-permit timelines.
