Italy’s League has proposed expanding the grounds for refusing or revoking citizenship, including a range of serious offences, and tightening rules for people born in Italy to foreign parents. The proposals would also require at least B1 Italian for citizenship by marriage or naturalisation; the bills are still under parliamentary consideration.
If adopted, the proposals would make citizenship access more dependent on criminal records, pending proceedings and proof of language ability. Applicants by marriage or naturalisation could face suspended applications, while foreigners born in Italy could face new barriers when applying at adulthood. The measures are most relevant to migrant families, long-term residents and people planning citizenship through marriage or naturalisation. According to sources, these remain bills rather than rules in force, but applicants should monitor their parliamentary progress.
