Children of foreign workers who have lived in Israel permanently but lack citizenship or recognized permanent-resident status are challenging their exclusion from military service. Current rules allow the enlistment of citizens, permanent residents, and certain visa holders, while families whose permits expired or were revoked may remain without legal status and face detention or deportation.
The case shows that long-term residence and social integration do not by themselves guarantee children of foreign workers legal status or the rights of permanent residents. Families with expired or revoked permits remain exposed to detention and deportation risks and may face restrictions in access to state systems. The legal challenge could affect how the status of these children is interpreted, but it is already relevant as an illustration of the consequences of lacking valid immigration documents. It is particularly important for foreign-worker families whose children were born or raised in Israel.
