Iceland’s Ministry of Justice has put forward a proposal to extend the residence period required for permanent residence from four to six years. The draft also includes changes to family reunification and spouse conditions, but it has not become law.
According to the source, the proposal could add two years to the path to permanent residence for nationals from outside the EEA. For future migrants, this may mean a longer route to permanent status and possible changes affecting family migration. The rule has not changed yet because the measure is still under public consultation. It is particularly relevant for non-EEA nationals planning a long-term move and eventual permanent residence.
