Iceland’s short-term residence permit is intended for extended visits to close family members and for certain artists, scientists and athletes, for a maximum of 180 days. It does not allow employment, legal-domicile registration, family reunification or a route to permanent residence; it cannot be renewed or granted more than once in a 12-month period.
According to official sources, this status is designed for temporary stays rather than relocation for settlement or work. Applicants must document the purpose of the visit, financial means, insurance and the ability to return; foreign documents generally require legalization and certified translation. Visa-required nationals may not apply from inside Iceland, while visa-exempt applicants must remain lawfully present and leave before their 90-day period expires. The rules matter for people planning an extended family visit or temporary professional activity, but the permit is not a substitute for a work or long-term residence permit.
