Hong Kong immigration guidelines set conditions for entry, work and residence

Published: 02.06.2026

A visa or entry permit is generally required to work, study, conduct business, reside or stay in Hong Kong beyond the visa-free period. The official guidelines also set specific arrangements for non-local graduates of Hong Kong institutions, overseas Chinese nationals and their family members.

According to immigration sources, moving to Hong Kong requires choosing the appropriate admission route and meeting general conditions, including a valid travel document, returnability, no criminal or security concerns, and adequate financial means. The IANG route allows non-local graduates of locally accredited Hong Kong programmes to stay and work initially for 24 months without additional conditions of stay. Overseas Chinese nationals admitted for employment or investment may bring a spouse or partner and unmarried dependent children subject to the scheme’s requirements. This is especially relevant to students, skilled workers, investors and families, who should identify the correct permit category before travel because visitor status does not permit work, study or business activity.
